About Althea

I am the President at Lewis Grant Writing Services, LLC. I possess over twenty years of experience in grant writing and consulting, having successfully secured more than $50M in grant funding for clients. I have a Master’s degree in Business Administration, and I am currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. I am also pursuing a certificate in Nonprofit Management at Duke University. Through my extensive experience, I have developed a deep understanding of the grant writing process and am dedicated to helping individuals and organizations achieve their goals.

My expertise extends to the facilitation of various grant writing and nonprofit seminars at over a dozen local community colleges across North Carolina. In addition, I contribute my skills and knowledge to serve as a peer grant reviewer for the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA), Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the US Department of Education, Americorp, United Way, and other local and national funding organizations.

I am recognized for my exceptional presentation skills, having presented at numerous workshops and conferences nationwide, such as the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), the Grant Professionals Association (GPA), and the Hampton University Ministers’ Conference. As a current member of GPA (national) and NC Chapter GPA, I remain committed to providing high-quality, professional grant writing and consulting services that meet the diverse needs of my clients.

My Story

Growing up in rural Bladen County, North Carolina, I spent my summers working in nearby farms and gardening, while learning the value of hard work from my parents. Although I didn’t find working in the garden appealing, I discovered my God-given talent for writing.

In middle school, I had an English teacher who always encouraged her students to write. Her class was my favorite! She would give us a topic to write about every day when we came to class. In fact, I earned the highest score in the school district on the end-of-grade (EOG) test in writing. My writing became my place of escape and my way of expressing my feelings on paper. Writing became my identity.

I never imagined my love for writing would inspire me to start my own grant writing and consulting business in 2013. I established Lewis Grant Writing Services, LLC with the goal of helping organizations identify and secure funding. Having worked for a non-profit organization that primarily relied on grants, I understand the challenges of identifying and securing funding to sustain operations.

My approach to grant writing is simple. I start with my client’s “why.” What inspired them to start their business? What is their story? I believe successful storytelling leads to grant success, and I am here to help tell their story.
